WHAT IS A FAMILY?
A Family is …….
- a group of people, a least two, bound together in a special way
- it provides love, care and support for one another
- members may not even live together all the time
- the family environment and family relationships, can have a big impact on
- a child or young person’s life
- positive family relationships can help children and young people flourish
- whatever way the family is structured, it can build strong, positive relationships
- it can promote well-being and support for children and young people
WHAT IS A ‘SAFE’ FAMILY?
A ‘safe family’ can help young ones experience positive peer relationships and grow up to become confident and resilient individuals, reaching their full potential.
WHAT ARE FAMILY STRUCTURES?
There are more than 10 common family structures. They include:
- Nuclear (traditional)
- Single parent
- Blended
- Extended
- same sex
- Childless
- Foster/adoptive
- Grandparent families
Each type represents a different arrangement of members living together and sharing responsibilities and none is inherently superior, as the quality of relationships within the family unit matters more than anything else.
