Lessons in Disaster Training

Rotary Melbourne and GADAus endorsed by Rotary SAFE Families are delighted to provide Rotarians the opportunity to participate in Lessons in Disaster training. www.genderanddisaster.com.au

With the heightened probability of more intense and frequent disasters due to climate change, coupled with social fragmentation and mounting pressure on emergency services, communities face growing challenges in recovery.

Extended recovery periods will have an adverse effect on families, partners, and specific vulnerable groups. Research has demonstrated an upsurge in domestic and family violence following such disasters.

This award-winning Lessons in Disaster training will help you understand:
• The distinct experiences of women, men, and LGBTIQA+ people during disasters.
• How gender roles often expect men to protect and provide while women are expected to prioritise nurturing others      at the expense of their own safety.
• That LGBTIQA+ people’s needs are frequently overlooked in disaster situations.
• That applying a gendered lens at every stage of disaster leads to stronger and more inclusive communities in recovery.

Attendance at this one-day training course is free thanks to federal funding from the Commonwealth Government, through the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032.

Commencing at 9.30am the training concludes at 4.30pm. It consists of 4 sessions:

1. Gender and Disaster – The Evidence
2. Drivers of Family Violence in Disasters
3. Disaster Gender and Diversity
4. Working Towards Change

Rotary Melbourne and GADAus will collaborate with Rotary Clubs to schedule a date for the training and identify an appropriate venue. Registrations forms will be forwarded to potential participants once the date and venue have been locked in.

We eagerly anticipate your participation in the training.
