A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO APPLY THE EIGHT PILLARS OF POSITIVE PEACE

EIGHT PILLARS OF POSITIVE PEACE


1. Well Functioning Government

As A Rotarian:
• Advocate for stronger protection laws and better enforcement. Partner with local authorities to support survivors.
 

Within the Family:
• Clear and fair household rules
• Regular family meetings
• Encourage accountability and fair decision making

2. Equitable Distribution of Resources


As A Rotarian:
• Advocate for stronger protection laws and better enforcement

Within the Family:
• Share household responsibilities
• Emotional, Financial, time resources balanced
• Support each others goals and needs

3. Free Flow of Information

As A Rotarian:
• Host educational events and create safe spaces

Within the Family:

• Encourage open dialogue
• Talk about feelings, issues and achievements
• Teach children to name and express their feelings safely

4. Good Relations with Neighbors

As A Rotarian:
• Encourage neighbourhood watch programs and foster community dialogue

Within the Family:
• Build trust, kindness and teamwork
• Participate in community activities together
• Model respect and empathy in all relationships

5. High Levels of Human Capital


As A Rotarian:
• Invest in education programs that teach non violent communication, gender equality and conflict resolution

Within the Family:
• Support lifelong learning, reading, emotional intelligence
• Celebrate achievements and offer support in challenges
• Foster a growth mindset and curiosity in children

6. Acceptance of the Rights of Others


As A Rotarian:
• Challenge harmful norms and stereotypes. Promote dignity and respect for all

Within the Family:
• Teach and model respect, boundaries, beliefs and differences
• Listen to children and validate their feelings and identities
• Challenge harmful gender roles or control based behaviour patterns

7. Low Levels of Corruption


As A Rotarian:
• Insist on integrity within systems meant to protect families - Transparency 

Within the Family:
• Be consistent with discipline and promises
• Admit mistakes and seek reconciliation when wrong
• Foster a culture of honesty and mutual trust

8. Sound Business Environment


As A Rotarian:
• Encourage businesses to adopt family friendly policies to support families affected by abuse

Within the Family:
• Practice good time and financial management as a family
• Prioritise quality time, routines and wellness
• Plan and problem solve together around household matters
